It was the sincere efforts of the government of India that regional rural banks in the country started on a great note in 1976, when the Act of Regional Rural Banks was passed. As per the clauses incorporated in this Act, new rural banks were supposed to be opened in different parts of the country, so as to benefit the rural population and provide them with a wide range of banking services, starting from opening up deposit accounts to availing of loan facilities. This merger has been ratified by J & K Bank in the state and it is also the sponsoring bank for the new Gramin bank. With gradual progress over the years, J & K Grameen Bank has regional offices in two cities, area offices in 6 locations and branches in 176 villages of J & K state. With the objective of catering to the banking needs of people in the village and semi urban areas, this bank has grown from one level to another with a series of accolades.
